<p>Iranian cinema constitutes one of the most significant domains for representing social transformations, providing a meaningful portrayal of the relationship between family and employment within the context of economic, cultural, and social change. The present study aimed to analyze the discourse surrounding family occupations in Iranian cinema through the examination of 40 prominent films produced across four decades—the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. Films were selected on the basis of either receiving an award at the Fajr Film Festival in at least one of the categories of “Best Film,” “Best Director,” “Audience Choice Award,” “Best National Film,” and “Best Screenplay,” or ranking among the ten highest-grossing films of the respective year. The theoretical framework of the study was based on an integration of PDM operational discourse analysis and Fiske’s semiotic approach. Accordingly, at five levels of operational discourse analysis, textual as well as visual, verbal, and narrative signs associated with occupations and family economic relations were identified and analyzed, and the key elements, nodal signifiers, and discursive articulations characterizing each period were determined. The findings indicate that the representation of family occupations in Iranian cinema evolved from the discourse of “work as a social commitment and moral value” in the 1980s to the discourse of “cultural capital and economic instability” in the 1990s, followed by “the informal economy and class inequality” in the 2000s, and ultimately “the fragility of job security” in the 2010s.</p>
