<p>Vocal music, like poetry, is rooted in the inner creative disposition of human beings and has often been conceptualized as an aesthetic phenomenon independent of power relations. With the advent of modernity beginning in the Qajar period, the introduction of visual and auditory media into Iran during the Pahlavi era, and the macro-level policies of institutions responsible for music during the Islamic Republic period, it appears that music in Iran has been directly influenced by power-driven policies and has become an instrument for the production of social identity in accordance with dominant models of governance. The present study adopts a qualitative approach and, drawing on Foucauldian genealogy and the theoretical framework of “knowledge–power–regime of truth,” with particular emphasis on the role of gender in Iranian vocal music, seeks to answer the following central question: Why have institutions of power separated the “gender of the singer” from the “gender of the singing voice,” and what role has this disjunction played in shaping the identity of auditory culture in Iran? The findings indicate that Iranian vocal music, beyond its musical and artistic form, has been transformed under the influence of institutions of power into a gendered, dualistic discourse. In pursuit of their desired sonic function, institutions of power have disregarded gender, with the result that the authentic identity of Iran’s auditory culture has not been formally recognized. The significance of this study lies in examining music through the analytical lens of power studies.</p>
